ABOUT US

Our Family Background.

Our family has been connected with horses for several generations. My maternal Great Grandfather, John Evans, was born in Brecon, Wales, in 1872 and passed away in 1940. To his friends he was known as Jack Evans. He bred Welsh Cobs and at one time, owned a famous stallion, called "Stallion Jack". We are lucky enough to own a little painting of this horse, painted by a lady who happened to have been a fan of the equine. My Great Aunt, who lived in Norfolk, England, owned heavy hunters and rode to the hounds. Another ancestral relative, was a famous saddle maker in Cornwall. My Mother also bred and showed horses and dogs most of her life. However, the Gypsies and their horses, were not new to her, since when growing up in England, as a small girl, she had accompanied her best friend and her father, to the horse fairs and had seen hundreds of Gypsy Horses. Her friend's father was breeding Trotters, and since the Gypsies also bred Trotters, he would take the girls along to the many fairs and auctions.
My paternal Grandfather, was also connected to horses. As a very young man, he went from Italy to Brazil, as a horse trainer, and later moved to the US.

My Background.

As a youngster, I had also grown up with horses of course. But after becoming a mother myself, I wanted something known for an excellent temperament. I had two young daughters and was on a search for just the right breed. Like many of us, one day when surfing the internet, I discovered the Gypsy Horse. Here was a breed, not only beautiful, but known for their wonderful temperaments.

Our Horses.

My first Gypsy Horse was a black and white Tobiano yearling, Harlequin Farms Halcyon. She has grown into a truly beautiful mare with action to spare. She was soon followed by the well respected, Harlequin Farms Serenity, another black and white Tobiano who screams Gypsy Cob type. We then purchased a young Blue Blagdon mare, whom we named Harlequin Farms Willerby Myst. Myst is the product of generations of known and famous horses. We have high hopes for this girl and she has matured into the most gorgeous mare with body, bone, hair and feather, to spare. Myst recently foaled a fabulous little blue and white, tobiano filly by our stallion Playboy.

Then came the beautiful Harlequin Farms Claire. She is a black and white Tobiano. Bred by the Harkers in the UK, she is a gorgeous mare with the best temperament anyone could wish for. She has already produced fabulous offspring. Claire and VV Silver Bullet, presented us with a gorgeous filly in 2009. She is a black, silver dapple tobiano. If she had been any colour, this filly would be judged outstanding. If she has faults - we can't find them and she's a keeper. Certainly we are excited to watch this filly grow and mature and have high hopes for her in the future.

Our latest addition, is a black and white tobiano filly. We have named her Shalimar. She is a granddaughter of our Serenity, by her son, Harlequin Farms The Prophet, by King of the Road. Since Serenity is now sold, we were excited to be able to aquire her granddaughter.

Our herd sire, is the well-known tri-coloured (black, bay and white) "Playboy". He is truly a work of art. He is everything the Gypsies themselves, are breeding for today. At his first show in the US as a yearling, he was crowned champion and came away with a score of two perfect 10's. He was also rated 1st. Premium Star at the GCDHA Inspections, as a two year old. This is a stallion, dreams are made of and we are honoured to own him.
Playboy's first foal crop in 2008, was as expected, exceptional.

We believe all our horses, to be excellent examples of the breed and with their known backgrounds, hopefully will be able to pass on their genetics, to the next generation. All our horses are handled constantly and absolutely MUST have superb temperaments. This is of extreme importance to us. My Mother, my children and visitors, must be able to handle all our horses without fear or problems. Most of our horses are trained under saddle and some put to the cart.

Our Breeding Philosophy.

We believe in very seriously, evaluating our stock, as they grow and mature. When deciding upon a possible breeding, we carefully evaluate both the stallion and mare, to make sure they don't possess faults in common and that they compliment each other, in the hopes of producing an offspring of quality. The future of the breed, depends on careful breeding and the evaluation of the horses used.
We also don't breed all our mares, each and every year.
We do NOT adhere to the production of multiple like breedings, using Embryo Transfers.
The majority of colts we produce are gelded.

Our Sales Philosophy.

When purchasing any horse - young or older from us, you can be sure the breeding was planned and carefully thought out. Most of the time, you will know the background of the sire and dam, for several generations since we have been doing extensive pedigree research for a few years now. You can be sure, that he/she has been handled regularly, at least had basic training and ground manners, has been bathed, groomed and vetted regularly since birth and is up to date on all vaccinations and wormed, according to age. Our farrier also visits every six weeks. We feed a quality diet throughout the lives of our horses, with supplements according to age, work or breeding condition.

If this is your first Gypsy Horse, then we will do our very best to educate you about the breed, explain the pros and cons of owning a heavy, hairy breed and tell you honestly if we feel you might not be the perfect match, for the horse about which you have inquired.

We encourage you to visit our horses in person, and if interested in purchasing one of them, to get to know the horse first hand. Just do give us a call first, to make an appointment so we are able to give you the time you deserve.

Should you contact us and we don't feel we have the perfect horse to fill your needs, then we will happily point you in the direction of other responsible breeders, who we feel might have something more to your liking, needs and skills.

Our horses are indeed part of our family, so don't be surprised if we ask you the buyer, many questions about your interest in the breed, how and where your horse will be housed and your plans for him/her in the future. We will always be there on call for you the buyer, just as we expect the horses we produce, to be well loved and taken care of.

We hope that all who purchase a horse from us, or indeed any breeder, will remember that it is a privilege to own such a horse and the future of the breed, lies in the hands of all those who seek to produce the next generation. Responsible breeding is never an accident, but a result of someone spending a great part of their lives, studying the breed, studying pedigrees, studying the individual horses they intend to use, and making sure that each horse they bring into this world, is an excellent example of the breed. You the buyer and the breed, deserve nothing less.
